Contract Engineers serving new R & D Centre

published on 14/01/09
Mondi Packaging has opened an R&D centre, designed for flexible packaging, in Korneuberg, Austria. The majority of the installations were carried out by a team of contract engineers.
The company has invested €4.5m in the centre, which has taken eight months to build. It houses two laboratories, and pilot production lines, which were installed by several mechanical contract engineers and includes digital printing equipment. Initially, 10 packaging specialists will work at the site, although it can accommodate twice that number.
Mondi Packaging’s flexible materials R&D experts were previously located at production sites. However, the new centre pools those resources and can be accessed by the various business units within the company. The team of contract engineers can carry out continuous maintenance for the lines which is done quickly and efficiently.
The materials that the centre will focus on include bio-degradable polymers, transparent barrier materials, and paper and polythene membranes. The pilot lines will enable the team to check materials they develop in near-industrial conditions and to make adjustments at low cost.
The official opening of the centre was attended by guests including key clients, representatives from international media and politicians.
The centre was opened by Mondi Packaging’s chief executive Peter J Oswald.
