A team of contract engineers have installed an Evo-Fold wrapper for Scottish confectioner Thomas Tunnock from Marden Edwards to wrap its teacake products.
The machine was installed at Tunnock's Uddingston facility in Glasgow, which also manufactures the company's caramel wafers. The contract engineers installed the machine with no disruption to the shifts within the factory.
It replaced a 10-year-old Evo-Fold wrapper and will be the third Marden Edwards wrapper purchased by the company.
'The old machine was perfectly serviceable, but Tunnock's wished to upgrade it to improve productivity,the contract engineers did a fantastic job and in the current economic climate it made sense to upgrade and for the same reason using the contract engineers meant that the company saved money too as the engineers came in when we asked them too and left when they had installed the machine, the contract engineers will however be responsible for the maintenace needs of the machine but again as and when it is requires so we are not carrying the wages of an engineer full time ' said Marden Edwards marketing director Jeremy Marden.
The machine is being used to wrap display boxes of 36 teacakes at a rate of up to 45 packs per minute.
Tunnock first viewed the Evo-Fold at the PPMA show at the NEC in September and was 'impressed by the improved specification and the price'.
'In particular, we liked the new guarding which enables total visibility during packing,' he added.
The machine was modified to move the heaters further away from the box after initial tests found they were melting the chocolate on the teacakes.
Tunnock's recently purchased its first automatic L sealer from Wraps UK, part of the Marden Edwards Group, and is currently looking into purchasing a new robotic packer, which if they decide to go ahead with will be installed by the same team of contract engineers using the same principle regarding cost.
Tunnock's was established in 1890 and exports products worth in excess of £4.5m to markets including Japan, Ireland, North America and the Middle East.
