published on 17/07/09 SABMiller is to open a US$125m brewery and soft drinks factory in Angola this year, in the latest stage of the brewer's African expansion plan, an operation that is due to keep a large team of contract engineers that have been brought in from a well known UK engineering outsource provider busy for many months.
The new greenfield brewery, based near Luanda in northern Angola, will begin production in October, with the contract engineers due to start work in the next few months. It will produce around 500,000 hectolitres (hl) of beer annually.
Sparkling soft drinks will be produced on three bottling lines, with the contract engineers being responsible for the ongoing pro active and re active maintenance of the bottling and production lines which have an annual capacity of 200,000 hl.
SABMiller has stepped up efforts to increase its presence across several countries in Africa, with Angola housing one of four new breweries planned for 2009. The factory manager said that with the contract engineering team doing such a good job of this one then it will be more than likely that they will be used for the new breweries for any maintenance involved with those, as outsourcing the engineering team cuts down on unnecessary overheads.
