Engineering Installation cools Firm's Energy Use

Logoplaste has turned to a local contract engineering outsrouce provider for a team of highly skilled mechanical engineers to install the Company’s Cooling System for its blow moulders.
The engineers faced the challenge of installing the system in a 12-hour window as the 1,040m² site is limited to storing approximately 12 hours of stock and any more down time than this could result in expensive losses for both Logoplaste and Arla. The engineers also had to ensure the installation would not disrupt production for the Arla operation next door.
The team of engineers also installed the system in when blizzard conditions raged outside. Workmen toiled in ankle-deep snow and freezing conditions to install the cooling system. 'They were having to weld and connect wires in those conditions,' says Hart. The installation was completed on time.
The original plan had included the reuse of the existing frame of the cooling system; however, these were found to be unsuitable for the new system. Instead, the Project Manager laboriously measured out the existing frame so a new one could be manufactured off site. 'The implications of this not fitting were unthinkable, so we did everything we could in preparation and it went without a hitch,' he says.

Installing Logoplaste's system involved removal and replacement of the existing chillers, modification of the supporting steel work and the installation of an air blast cooler. This allows the company to benefit from free cooling in ambient conditions as water is chilled using the outside conditions as opposed to using an electric fan.
Since the installation was completed, Logoplaste has monitored its energy savings from its new cooling system. Jon Hart says: 'Compared with the same time last year, when we had a similar volume of production, we saved 40,000kW in January and February. This equates to around £3,600 in fuel savings, putting us on track to achieve our payback schedule of 33 months.'
